Asian Family Sports Day Brings Community Together at Sherwood School


Sherwood School came alive on the 11th as families, students, and community groups gathered for the annual Asian Family Sports Day. The event was proudly co-hosted by the Auckland Chinese Families Network and SportHub Community Trust, celebrating culture, connection, and active participation through a wide range of sports and movement-based activities for all ages.

Throughout the day, participants rotated through multiple activity stations led by local sports clubs, schools, and community organisations. The focus was on inclusion, fun, and introducing young people to new sports, skills, and community pathways in sport.

A Wide Range of Activities and Partners

Families enjoyed hands-on experiences across a variety of activity zones, including:

  • Active Stars – fun, movement-based games and foundational physical activities for younger children
  • Dragon Beats – high-energy rhythm and coordination sessions
  • Synergy Sports – skill-based sports activations and coaching experiences
  • Hibiscus Coast AFC – football drills, skills challenges, and small-sided games
  • St Johns Cadets – teamwork, leadership, and basic first aid activities
  • APPA/APAClub – Pickleball skills and play
  • Linking Sports – pickleball and tennis skills and gameplay sessions
  • UOA Golf Club – putting challenges and golf skill development
  • NZ School of Korea – cultural sport demonstrations and participation activities
  • Takapuna District Cricket Club – batting, bowling, and cricket skill stations
  • East Coast Bays Cricket – cricket games and skill development
  • Hungerball – fast-paced small-sided football challenges
  • Flow Academy of Motion – agility, coordination, and creative movement workshops

A Celebration of Community Through Sport

The Asian Family Sports Day created a vibrant, family-friendly environment where children and parents could try new sports, connect with local clubs, and build confidence through physical activity.

Organisers highlighted the success of the collaboration between the Auckland Chinese Families Network, SportHub Community Trust, schools, and sports organisations, which helped deliver a meaningful day focused on inclusion, wellbeing, and community connection in Auckland.
